Memo from the Mayor

So much is happening it’s hard to keep track. Here a few items to watch for this spring:

St. Mary's to build new facility

St. Mary’s Hospital announces its new $200 million facility at the Highway 179 site. The economic impact cannot be overstated.  With Capital Region Hospital’s recent expansions, Jefferson City is poised to solidify its status as a premier regional health nexus. Plans are underway for the underpass to enable St. Mary’s relocation, and both the city and the county have committed funds for the east and west connectors.

City View Interchange

The City View interchange is taking shape with completion slated for late 2008. Much needed retail growth on East Side will generate robust residential growth and enhanced property values.

Capital Hills Annexation

The initial annexation vote for the Capital Hills area was very close, with 80% acceptance from city residents, and only two votes shy of acceptance in the annexation area.  With the St. Mary’s relocation in the works, this annexation is critical for planned growth in the area.

Lewis and Clark Monument

Lewis and Clark Monument

Watch all the dirt being moved just east of the Capitol. The Lewis and Clark monument is taking shape.

Visitor's Center

The Visitor’s Center project has been assigned to a council committee.  The State Division of Tourism is on board.  Our local CVB is on board.  Can we transform this historical building into a statement about what the Capital City has to offer?  Absolutely!

Federal Court House

Federal funding the new $66 million courthouse has been secured. Groundbreaking begins this summer. To learn more visit www.gsa.gov/jeffcity.

Missouri River Bridge Walkway Project

Private contributions are secured for Missouri River Bridge walkway project.

It’s now up to the engineers to bring the Katie Trail to the Capitol.

Missouri River Bridge

Adrian’s Island

Over, under, around or through --- let’s get to the river. The council approved funding of a feasibility study to get us there. Future generations will wonder why it took so long.

Tour of Missouri

We’re a “Finish City” for the Tour of Missouri this September. It was fun last year, but it will be huge this year.

Prison Brews

Prison Brews

Prison Brews, a new microbrewery in the old Landwehr Dairy building on Ash Street will open soon. This will compliment O’Donoghue’s, a great restaurant around the corner, carving out a new economic center in an important core area. It’s taking a while, but MSP redevelopment is beginning to spill over into the community.

Final Notes

Congratulations to the Finance Department for tenth (yes, tenth) Excellence Award.  And many thanks to Community Development for managing all the storm debris – seemingly without breaking a sweat. They truly made a molehill out of a mountain.

Mayor John Landwehr
